Want a sneak peek?

Here’s the shortest version of what we look at and how we analyse managed funds & ASX ETFs:

  • What it does for investors?
    • What it invests in?
    • How it gets the exposure?
    • Are there any idiosyncratic risks or oddities?
    • What do we know about similar strategies?
  • How could an investor use it?
    • What is the estimated risk-return profile?
    • Is this the best ‘expression’ of the exposure?
    • Is the security selection and portfolio construction appropriate for the exposure?
    • Is it an ETF designed for Core/SAA or Satellite/TAA exposure?
    • Is there meaningful overlap with existing and better funds?
  • Risk ratings
    • Risks associated with the issuer
    • Is the fund at scale?
    • Does the fund balance profitability with competitiveness?
    • Is the track record a decent estimate of the future performance?
    • Are the analyst team and legal risks well managed and well-resourced?
    • Is the tax and liquidity profile reasonable?
  • Fees & costs
    • Are the fees appropriate for the exposure and asset class?
    • Are the indirect costs articulated to investors and appropriately managed?
    • Is the registry well resourced for the fund’s scale and growth expectations?
    • Are the fund’s fees and costs likely to come down in time?
  • Comparables
    • Within the sector (side-by-side)
    • Are there other products that are competing for this expression in a portfolio? (the portfolio perspective)
    • Is the fund a worthwhile consideration at all, or is it just a marketing gimmick?

These are just a taste of what we consider when we provide our ratings on funds. However, at the end of the day it comes back to an in-depth checklist (like this) but also our years of investment experience, training, broader research, interviews with fund managers, advisers and investors that informs our view.

And, as always, we retain the right to change our view on a fund at any time.

Fund managers be warned: Best ETFs is coming. And we stand for investors.
